Hello everybody;
Apologies for multiple postings, but we would like to draw your attention and encourage you to submit your abstract to our session at this fall’s AGU meeting (December 14-18, San Francisco).
T048. The Influence of the Metamorphic Environment on Grain-Scale Deformation and Recovery Mechanisms in the Crust<https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm15/preliminaryview.cgi/Session8967>
Invited Speakers:
Michael Stipp, GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany
Donna Whitney, University of Minnesota, USA
Jay Thomas, Syracuse University, USA
Session ID#: 8967
Session Description:
The deformation mechanisms that occur in the deep crust during mountain building are dependent upon the fluids released by metamorphic reactions. Thus, the metamorphic environment dictates the duration and type of deformation mechanism. Some deformation mechanisms can operate at various levels in the crust (pressure solution, grain boundary sliding) while others are restricted to certain temperature ranges. At mid-crustal to deeper levels, recovery mechanisms (subgrain development, grain boundary migration) are dependent on the grain size and the fugacities of fluid species, particularly water. Metamorphic reactions that produce carbonic fluids affect water fugacities. Textural relationships among grains can be used to decipher the time-integrated histories of temperature, pressure, and fluid compositions in the crust during orogenesis. The aim of this session is to bring together workers studying the chemical, petrological, microstructural, and modeling aspects of deformation and metamorphism so that the feedback between the two can be more fully understood.
The abstract submission deadline is August 5, 2015 (11:59 p.m. EDT).
