NB:  As has been true of other selections offered to the list, this one includes images selected for their artistic merit, for their iconographic interest, for geographic or cultural variety, and for variety of artistic media and of artistic styles.   It's a bit on the long side  -- and thus probably not for one sitting --, largely because in addition to non-narrative portraits and to images of martyrdom it encompasses examples of two actions very frequently illustrated: Thomas' palpation of the risen Jesus ("Doubting Thomas") and his more legendary receipt of Mary's cincture (a.k.a. her belt or her girdle) during her assumption into Heaven.
