The Role
The person will make a significant contribution to the teaching and research activities of the Department of Criminology and Sociology. The successful applicants will have to maintain a personal programme of research and scholarship of international standard in an area which fits within the remit of the Department, attract and supervise postgraduate research students, be proactive in developing productive national and international links with academics within their own and from other disciplines as well as developing links with other stakeholders and potential users of their research; contribute to the academic management of the School and attract national and international grant funding. The Department of Criminology and Sociology is an exciting and growing unit in which academics carry out quality research and lead research-based teaching.
The Person
Applicants must have a PhD in criminology, a proven record of research and the ability to attract external research funding. Applicants should also be able to work with colleagues from other disciplines and communicate effectively with academic and non-academic audiences. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute in an area of criminology that complements our existing research. The person will make a significant contribution to the Department's research and lecturing activities. Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level is essential. Expertise in quantitative methods is highly desirable.
The Department
With a team of 19 teaching and research staff, the Department has an outstanding record for postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and engaging in research of international excellence. In addition to its undergraduate programmes, the Department also offers post graduate courses in Criminology and Criminological Psychology. The Department provides a vibrant research environment with particular strengths in the areas of Religion and Society, Crime and Social Justice, Power and In-Securities , and Media, Consumption and Gender. Staff in criminology draw on a range of inter-disciplinary areas to explore and drive forward critical understandings of crime and social justice. With expertise in the areas of: policing & securities; prisoner education and resettlement; cybercrime; gender and crime; welfare practices; sexual violence and victimisation; transphobic hate crime; religion, race and domestic abuse; and human rights and the law, our research aims to have real life impact for those who engage with the criminal justice system.
We offer an engaged teaching curriculum with a focus on the application of criminological knowledge and research methods in the criminal justice system and in the shaping of criminal justice policy. Gaining strong foundations in criminological theory, policy and practice, our students are informed by national and international perspectives in criminology.
We are currently seeking to fill one post at a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level (depending on the candidate’s current stage of career) to contribute to the teaching in one or more of the following areas: Critical Criminology; Criminal Justice; Policing and Punishment; Youth, Crime & Justice; or Quantitative Research Methods.
