I agree with you, for the most part.
It's not a question of indicating provenance of a new thread - as others
have suggested.
It's a question of cluttering up the Subject line, which makes it harder -
both for software and wetware - to quickly identify subject.
Provenance can easily be stated at the top of the first post of a new
thread.
However, it also depends on the nature of the change of topic. I have seen
a few good instances on this list of where the WAS... construct was quite
helpful because, for instance, the subject as given was perhaps not the
best to begin with, or that the subject of the new thread was very, very
tightly connected to the old one. Such instances are, in my experience,
quite rare.
So, yeah, I would suggest that the WAS construct isn't usually needed. But
like with most rules, there are rare but worthy exceptions.
