Hello everyone,
Each of the design disciplines might have a different tradition with studies at Master's level.
In architecture, at this time, the undergraduates compete their coursework with a BS in Architectural Studies, which is not considered a professional degree. The professional degree is M.Arch. Only Master's programs are accredited, which is indicative about the new structure of professional education and the expectations of the employers. In my estimation, about 30% to 50% the undergraduates continue their education at Master's level within several years of completing their BSAS. Students are advised to work for a few years before going to Grad School.
My impressions from other discussions on this list is that in graphic and industrial design the situations is very different. I have heard here that designers don't need to go to school. So, I can understand that the percentage of undergraduates going for a Master's degree is insignificant. There is a similar situation in Interior Design, although the numbers there might be slightly higher.

It should be obvious that our advice cannot apply to all fields but in the graphic design program at East Carolina University, we actively discourage most students from going directly to grad school from their undergraduate studies. The undergraduate degree prepares them to work in the field (with many possible career directions) and we believe that other degrees in graphic design-related subjects are more worthwhile when the student has work experience. (We have also consistently refused to admit MFA students directly from an undergraduate program for the same reason.)
