medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
College Art Association Meeting, Feb. 3-6, 2016
There’s No Such Thing as Visual Culture
Sponsored by the Historians of German and Central European Art and
Architecture
Session chair: Corine Schleif
Visual display, functions of the gaze, and maintenance of scopic
economies have played important roles in the consideration of (German)
visual culture and art. Yet visual perception never existed in
isolation. In fact, recent neurological studies point up complex
interactions of many sensibles with respect to cognition, emotion and
memory.
Presenters might provide case studies in which they theorize the ways in
which vision was augmented, limited or even contradicted by the
interplay of other senses. Panelists might analyze how museum practices
have feminized and colonized their historical objects by subjugating
them to the aestheticizing or exploitative gaze, thereby foreclosing
more interactive sensualities. Why did the discipline of art history
develop as pursuant of the visual? How did early German and central
European art historians support or resist purely visual regimes? Why did
the “haptic” gain consideration in German art historiography? What might
scholarly production learn either from cinematographic attempts to
engage the entire sensorium or from journalistic precautions voluntarily
limiting visual representation of sensitive material? Possible topics of
exploration include liturgical processions of the Middle Ages, public
Heiltumsweisungen of the Renaissance, theatrical Gesamtkunstwerke of the
Baroque to the nineteenth century, popular military re-enactments of
recent date, or documentary virtualizations of the Holocaust from our
own day.
