Just one more idea, with a spin of the original question.
My experience is that the major problem in delivering the proper argumentation is not in the argumentation skills, but in the conceptualization skills. That is why I focus on philosophy, theory, and criticism of design. Students need to understand and conceptualize something, need to be able to articulate their ideas, before presenting them and defending them.
Design programs offer good methods for hands-on idea generation. However, there is a need for more theory and methodology courses. There was a previous discussion on applying design history in the design process. In a similar way, we need design theory courses that are developed with the aim to apply this knowledge in design, not just for learning design theory for its own sake. There should be a difference in teaching design history, history of theory, and theory courses in design programs and art history programs.
