We've been playing with content grouping for our SSO'd
intranet/extranet/home page. 
We use Joomla and LDAP groups for targeting news/links/home page
content
We've only really been focusing on:
students - things specifically for students
teaching staff (student record management links and testing
applications etc)
non-teaching staff (without the student records)
governors (so they have big links and they can find their content
easily)
campus - for students, there is a small area for campus focussed
information

People can also customize some of their own content, move/hide boxes
etc.

We have been trying to build a comprehensive a menu system for ALL the
web applications used here. It was necessary to have grouping
information for this.

I wonder, how common are online personalisation techniques in our
sector?
I'm talking about where a visitor to a site is presented with content
based upon data collected about them as an individual.

Are any of you currently using personalisation on your sites? Or
working towards using it?
If so, what system do you use? Is personalisation bundled as a feature
of your CMS or with an integrated 3rd party product?
What successes have you had? Any difficulties?

More broadly, does your institution see a moral/privacy issue with
collecting and using visitor data in this way?
If so, how have you addressed this?
