There have been substantial academic studies as indicated in the past
correspondences of this thread on "research through design" in our field
for more than a decade.
Here is the reading list we read at Istanbul Technical University with my
PhD students as an introduction to research through design. I myself
learned this approach from Chris Rust and I recommend his articles listed
below. They contain clearly written examples with a simple language. You
may also check the PHD list archive for past emails since this has been a
recurring discussion in the past.
