medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
George,
You might like to study the twelfth-century "Chaldon Doom"
http://www.chaldonchurch.co.uk/chaldon-mural and see if you can make out
any popes on it - to be honest I'm not sure I can, but my screen is a
bit small.
Best regards,
Jane

There are some depictions of Dante’s Inferno that show this, of course, but the question is whether people could have seen such images before having read, or been told about, Dante’s literary creation.
