Who is the saintly woman? Is this the Virgin Mother? If so she is certainly
well preserved for a first century mother of a 33 year old Jesus. Is this
the Magdalene, reportedly the first to see the risen Christ? Or are there
other candidates? What causal role, if any, does she play in Christ's
sorrows? If she plays no such role, why is she depicted at all?
Veronica ? She is part of the traditional Stations of the Cross.
