I’m still up to my ears in a major project with deadlines looming. But I came up for air and had a quick skim through this thread.
As before, this is a brief contribution and I will not be able to engage in a detailed discussion. But this might be useful…
In 2007 I wrote a paper for Visible Language in which I articulated an approach to research through design which built on Frayling’s earlier work. In summary I wrote:

My claim is that research through design, at least in my own field, is well established with defined methods and processes, a clear epistemology, and a long history of practice and success in the ‘real’ world. I don’t know if this is in any way related to the Zimmerman et al paper. I have not read it.
Some on this list might find interesting challenges in my paper. Terry will undoubtedly splutter over my epistemological claims.
