medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There are a number of saints to choose from today, I post a couple of
images of St Ildephonsus of Toledo.
St Ildephonsus of Toledo (c 607-677)
Archbishop of Toledo, born of Spanish family and perhaps educated in
part by Isidore. He became a monk in his youth and after ordination as
a priest in 637 later became abbot around 650. To0ok part in councills
in 653 and 657, in the latter year also becoming Archbishop. A pastor,
he also wrote a treatise on Baptism and another on the post-Baptismal
journey of the soul. Other works included biographies of 7thC church
worthies and that for which he is particularly remembered, his
treatise on the Virginity of Mary. The story of Mary appearing to him
and giving him a chasuble is found in most Mary legend collections from
the 12thC onwards. Here are two representations of that:
Painting of 1490-1500, showing Virgin giving chasuble to Ildephonsus
for defending her perpetual virginity. By an unknown Spanish master.
