Hi Katherine
I have a set of basic (tesco value) mobile telephones on a pay as you go basis. Every exam room has a mobile telephone included in the Stationery pack and on the phone we have 4 numbers programmed in. My Assistant, The Data Manager (who is office based only) the School Reception and the Student Services Admin lady who records absences. I have a laminated form in the tray explaining who does what and how to use the phone (yes no one uses a basic phone any more). In some cases where students have epilepsy or other medical conditions, we include the Nurse's mobile as well (but this is one we supply so she knows when/if it rings it is an exam candidate.
We check the battery and credit limit frequently - daily during the big exam season and ensure it is always on silent. We cannot contact them as we don’t know which phone they use, so if we need them we go to the venue, but we couldn’t have the phone ringing ad hoc anyway. Having it on silent also prevents Tesco and the seemingly obligatory PPI calls disturbing the exams. If they need help, they ring. If the number is engaged, then they ring again
It works really really well. We only have to make sure that the phones are circulated regularly so a call is made every few months on each phone to prevent them being locked. Invigilators like this too
Hope this helps
Regards
Anna

Subject: Invigilation
Hi
I am interested in finding out how your invigilators communicate with you if there is an issue in an exam. At the moment we use radio's but this often causes alot of noise in the office as our radio picks up other users outside the college.
Any other ideas would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
