Of late i have been trying to abstract some fundamental features of
design education that has the potential for awakening the inner child.
I was able to explore this only because of my exposure to how children
learn naturally or to be in the world.
1. Design education being practice based has the potential for
integrating the body and mind provided planning and doing are not
separated (this is not what is happening now).
2. Designing demands one to start seeing the way things are. This is
happening in very narrow sense and this can be opened up more to see
how the world functions. This makes one truly present , be mindful of the NOW.
3. Designing new products demands one to be in the realm of unknown.
This comfort with being not knowing what to do is very important state.
Natural learning in children is very similar to this abstracted aspects.
Children are exploring the way world looks, feels and functions.
Seeing is about forms, feeling is about understanding the quality of
materials and doing is the way to understand the process/ phenomenon.
Children's spontaneous play in villages is about awakening the tools
to know the world and to explore various aspects of the world. form,
quality, process and location. I think this is the basis for
indigenous/ traditional knowledge because it deals with existence.
Design is closed (stricter purpose) version of natural learning or
natural learning is open ended version of design process.
Other aspects that can be explored is to face the colonization or
conditioning of aesthetic sense. in many people in fact sense of
beauty has been disabled.
As one becomes sensitive ethical dimensions of ' for whom design, why
design' etc also gets cropped up.
