medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
IIRC, in the latter part of the 17th century, St Lucy's Day (December 13th)
was a highly favoured day for weddings - being the shortest day of the year
and therefore the longest night ....
Nowadays December 21st is generally given as the shortest day, the
discrepancy being due to the reforms of the calendar in 1752.
But it probably is significant that a saint whose name means "light"
should be commemorated on what was once the shortest day.
