medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Good morning,
If you are looking for something of a quick overview, I have found Damian Joseph Blaher's PhD thesis very useful with students. I assign pages 12-13 for the juridical form: Blaher. "The Ordinary Process in Causes of Beatification and Canonization. A Historical Synopsis and Commentary." Washington, D.C.; The Catholic University of America Press, 1949. It is an oldie but a goodie when you just need an overview or something to accompany a primary so students get an idea of what the process may have looked like. This year my students wanted to analyze the parallels between the TV show "Law & Order" and Blaher's piece... I told them to go wild in their own time.
Cheers,

Besides Vauchez (a must read), here are some useful texts:
Christian Krötzl, "Prokuratoren, Notare und Dolmetscher: Zu Gestaltung und Ablauf der Zeugeneinvernahmen bei spätmittelalterlichen Kanonisationsprozessen," Hagiographica 5 (1998), 119-140;
Gábor Klaniczay, "Speaking about Miracles: Oral Testimony and Written Record in Medieval Canonization Trials," in The Development of Literate Mentalities in East Central Europe, eds. Adda Adamska and Marco Mostert, Brepols 2004.
Best wishes,
Anders Fröjmark

Hi Cate
Andre Vauchez, Sainthood in the later Middle Ages is the classic account.
Interestingly, though, there is a LOT still to be done. I've been working for many years on the canonization process of Thomas Cantilupe, from 1307, and I still come across aspects of the record that puzzle me! Lots of miracles there, though.

These tend to stress the piety of Edmund's life and behaviour rather than witnessing to miracles. Edmund's canonization is an example of the formal process of canonization that became established (I think - am I right?) in the thirteenth century. Can anyone suggest an account of the development of the process of canonization in this period? I thought I'd look at Colin Morris' book on the Papal Monarchy; any other ideas?
