Hello,
Offlist, through Verdian I received some helpful information from Rudi Wynard De Lang who is happy that I publish it to phd-design.

Miles A. Tinker and Donal Paterson published about 200 empirical papers about legibility – the optimum graphic structure for text and headlines.
It culminated in a seminal book – The Legibility of Print, published in 1963. His first paper was published in the late 20’s, the last paper somewhere in the 70’s.
Their work established the optimum line length, line spacing and type size for reading continuous text to name but a few.
Yes, using Tinker’s results, a double column layout should theoretically increase legibility, comprehension and it is also more economical.
