I am in an airport, have enough time but only my iPhone and am not inclined to respond as extensively as birger's post. but the issues this thread raises are important and I want to express my appreciation to what birger wrote.
i am on the way to india where I want to spell out the implications of defining design are problem solving as well as being motivated by market considerations.
I am glad birger mentions horst rittel. I agree with him not because he was my mentor in ulm, but he took the complexity of what I now call the stakeholders in a design into account in describing what designers do and in doing so came to doubt much of the current talk of problem solving, problem reframing, problem finding, etc.

I defined design as developing innovations to the point of being communicable to cooperative stakeholder communities to make something of them. it is not necessarily motivated by someone's definition of a problem or the need to increase the size of a market. although servicing institutional interest may be the reality that some designers face, I would resist defining design in terms.
instead, I would like to see design as the responsible
motor of innovation which keeps individuals alive and cultures viable and society livable.
one of the more important abilities of designers is to question what is commonly thought to be impossible. another is to create sufficient diversity to enable people to design their own world.
there is more to design then seeking evidence, which takes the scientific paradigm too literately
