Hi, Ken,
Thank you for your message. You raise several issues. I'll address them separately for clarity.
First the issue of using data.
Design activity is different from other activities. Research and theory making involves identifying differences in processes such as design regardless of apparent surface similarities.
I suggested the relationship between design and data goes as follows: designing occurs, data is gathered, then more designing occurs. That is, the data refers to past designing.
I'm puzzled at your criticism because you appear to agree. You wrote that data is used
'After one stage in design has occurred and before the next. As iterations proceed, one applies the method again, and again, and then again.
This to me suggests that the use of data follows designing - regardless of any perception of an overall design event flow.
This suggests your personal criticisms of me are misdirected.
Ditto for your comment about reading your PowerPoints.
I read your PowerPoints as soon as you posted them, and found some of the material very useful, including your distinction between a field and discipline, which differs from the distinctions that I've come across elsewhere.
There are a couple other issues in Your PowerPoints that I have comments on besides evidence-based design ( you asked for comments!) I will raise them in separate posts.
If you can believe it, after reading your Powerpoints. I started collating an article in support of your position. I was doing this by bringing together my own publications and discussions on evidence-based design for posting on the blog on www.love.com.au . It was while writing this article, I realised the epistemological problems of evidence-based design and the need for moving beyond it.
Best wishes,
Terry
