Brighton University’s College of Arts and Bath Spa University are pleased
to announce that registration is now open for the international and
interdisciplinary conference, The Wizard of Oz and the Cultural
Imagination. The conference takes place from Friday 21st November to
Saturday 22nd November at Grand Parade, Brighton (UK). We are especially
pleased to announce our keynote speakers:
Professor Peter Franklin (University of Oxford): ‘ “Once in a Lullaby”: The
Art of The Utopian Fantasy Song circa 1900-1940.
Dr Pamela Karantonis (Bath Spa University): ‘The Land of Oz: Lost and Found
in the Colonial Imaginarium of The Wizard of Oz.
Dr Tommy J. Curry (Texas A & M University): The Black Aesthetic Aspiration:
Black Fantasy as the Fracturing of Urban Realism in Lumet's The Wiz (1978)
This two-day cross-disciplinary conference will also feature presentations
by academics and practitioners covering a range of areas. Since this
conference has been organized in recognition of the 75 year legacy of The
Wizard of Oz, the conference organisers are also inviting delegates to a
special sing-along screening of the film and cabaret to be held at the
Sallis Benny Theatre at Grand Parade on the Friday evening. We are pleased
to announce that the cost of this night of celebration is covered in the
conference fee.
Registration closed 17th November. Only £25 for both days for doctoral
researchers*
