medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am wondering if any learned list member has a precise definition of the phrase "privilegium amplissimum". I found such a privilege granted to the 'cardinal abbot' of Glanfeuil by Urban II in 1096. The grant is not further explained in the source. It appears to be a canonical term which exempts the grantee from various sorts of obligations: from the authority of the bishop, for instance, and seems most often given to monasteries. I am guessing it is a legal but generic term, which means '"the absolute or fullest possible privilege of X, without exception or reservation". But does anyone have a more precise definition?
thanks
