We have had real issues in the last few years with the number of separate rooms and laptops being requested. We now insist on evidence of need for a student to sit their exam in a smaller room (with a small number of other students) eg a medical letter showing that they have genuine reasons for this eg documented anxiety, or a medical condition. We try and minimise 1:1 separate rooms, these are only given in exceptional circumstances (and of course for readers/scribes).
Re laptops now the JCQ have tightened up the advice for putting these in place it's much better, we ensure that the student complies with the JCQ regulations- we either have evidence of a learning difficulty or medical condition, or in a very few cases where it's due to organisational difficulties without the student having a learning difficulty, we request full information from teaching staff to evidence need.
