Please can I draw your attention to a permanent Band 8a Principal Clinical Scientist (Biochemist) post available in the Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMD) laboratory at Birmingham Children's Hospital. NHS jobs reference: 284-SM552-14. The successful candidate will be a state registered clinical scientist and should either have or be working towards FRCPath. He/she will play a role in service provision and development and will contribute to clinical liaison within the IMD section of the department. Experience of HPLC, GCMS, tandem MS and/or of IMD is desirable.
Newborn Screening & Biochemical Genetics is a CPA accredited department within Paediatric Laboratory Medicine and is commissioned to provide Newborn Screening and Inherited Metabolic Disorder laboratory services, including cell culture and a range of specialist enzymology and molecular biology tests, to the West Midlands region. Some very specialist tests are provided nationally and internationally. There is close liaison with the clinical IMD multidisciplinary team within the children's hospital and with the adult clinical IMD team at University Hospital Birmingham NHS FT, and the department has links with the Regional Genetics Laboratory at Birmingham Women's Hospital NHS FT. We also work closely with the paediatric hepatology and neurology teams, and there are opportunities to work with other clinical specialties. There is an active R&D programme.
Birmingham Children's Hospital provides a wide range of specialist medical, surgical and mental health services to Birmingham and the West Midlands region. Several services are nationally commissioned. The hospital also provides general paediatric care, has a paediatric Emergency Department, and the largest Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in the UK.
