Dear all
I have forwarded this to our university's UCU rep as I know the UCU is
campaigning on casualisation. I appreciate that if you need a range of
languages, you might need to include freelance researchers, but there are
better ways of doing this.
The other thing that worries me about this, in addition to all the
concerns about the researchers involved is how on earth this is going to
be assured to be ethical and good quality work. The casual researchers
would appear to be hired like freelance couriers, with no professional
development, nothing in place to assure their safety during fieldwork, to
ensure their interviewing approach is ethical and of good quality, nothing
to check the quality of the translations, no oversight of the 'coding'
process. This kind of analysis can't be done by a robot (or it probably
already would be) and researchers need support, guidance and the chance to
discuss ideas and emerging issues even at the first stage of coding, for
the work to be assuredly high quality.
