First day of employment: As soon as possible
Reference number: PER 2014/338
The School of Design and Crafts (HDK) is one of three departments in the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg. We have our roots in a historical tradition - the school was founded in 1848 - at the same time that we develop in pace with the surrounding world. Today, we provide education of designers, artisans and art and crafts teachers, and we conduct research and educate researchers in these subjects.
HDK’s programmes in design are based on a holistic perspective of design, and focus particularly on the joint design competence at the core of all design activities. We have created design programmes that have broken the boundaries between the traditional areas of design. Our students have the possibility to work across boundaries and in-depth with artefacts and services in a broader overlapping field of design, which includes environments, processes, structures and systems in a post-disciplinary spirit where great emphasis is placed on social and societal aspects of design.
HDK’s design programmes currently consist of one programme, Design, in the first cycle (undergraduate) and three programmes in the second cycle (graduate): Design, Child Culture Design (CCD) and a programme in cooperation with the School of Business, Economics and Law: Business & Design. HDK also has a third cycle (doctoral) education in design with some 10 doctoral students and actively works to build up a research environment. We also offer stand-alone courses in design.
Subject area
Design specialising on interventions
Specific subject description
Design interventions at HDK concerns how design and design processes - in dialogue with various actors and circumstances - work in their direct, actual and concrete contexts. The premise is that design, in that it aims for a change in the given - for instance socially, aesthetically and spatially- in itself is a form of intervention and a form of activism. Another premise is that change not only concerns the concrete, but also to an equal extent the imaginary - expectations and dreams just as much as concrete conditions and actual limitations.
Design interventions at HDK are an area of knowledge under development. We see that, in an increasingly diverse and multicultural society, growing demands are placed on design and design processes and what they aim for, how they take place, who they exist for and what impressions they leave. Here, there are a number of critical issues concerning participation, co-creation, sustainable development, gender, norm criticism, post and transdisciplinarity that challenge design and its methods, processes, roles and tools – i.e. as ethical/aesthetic practice. Design interventions at HDK intend to meet these challenges from a making-perspective and dialogue with other fields of knowledge and disciplines.
