**PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL POSTGRADUATE, EARLY CAREER AND INDEPENDENT
RESEARCHERS ***
HARTS & Minds interdisciplinary journal for postgraduates and Early
Career Researchers of the arts and humanities, is looking for an EDITOR
FOR MUSIC to join their team.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
This would be someone whose postgraduate research degree does, or did,
focus specifically on the history and/or theory of music, to actively
participate in the promotion of our journal to other academics studying
somewhere in this field, and to encourage submissions from them. The
editor should therefore be someone who is part of, or aware of, networks
and groups to whom our journal would be of interest as well as searching
out a more international audience.
The role also, and chiefly, involves reviewing submissions in your
field, finding external academics to peer review potential publication
pieces and then working closely with an author to get their piece up to
publication standard. You should have a fairly fluid and broad knowledge
base (some awareness from ancient to contemporary, global and Western).
Early career and Independent researchers should be within five years of
completing their PhD.
ROLE PARTICULARS
The position is not paid, but would be highly beneficial to your future
career prospects. However, we ask you to consider your workload
carefully before applying, for although your role would not involve
working on this everyday or even week, when we are working on an issue,
and particularly when getting pieces ready for publication you will need
to devote a substantial portion of time to thorough editing work. You
may wish to consult your supervisor (where applicable) before applying.
REGULAR COMMUNICATION IS ESSENTIAL, we often require a response within a
day or so, and for editors to let us know when they will be unavailable
for any considerable period.
All editors join us for a trial period over their first issue.
FOR REFERENCING we predominantly use MHRA alongside our own guidelines.
Therefore, someone familiar with a similar system (such as MLA) would be
at an advantage.
EDITING EXPERIENCE is not essential, but is highly desirable. Experience
of marking and/or proof reading at HE level (if you have not edited
before) is also desirable.
ABOUT HARTS & MINDS
HARTS & Minds was established by Daniel Evers and Jen Baker at the
University of Bristol in 2012. In two years we have complete four issues
on a variety of topics and in the past year have included Creative
Writing pieces and Reviews (Book, conference, exhibition etc) to our
eligible submissions.
The aim of our journal is to encourage the sharing of information across
the disciplines, across the world and through different mediums, but
most particularly to aid postgraduates and Early Career Researchers
(including independent researchers) in getting their work published.
Many journals require work to be pristine at the point of submission,
and whilst we still have standards and expectations for our submissions,
we also look for the potential in pieces and if chosen will help the
author to polish and refine their work meaning that the pieces we
publish are all of a very high standard.
APPLICATION
Please send an email as a covering letter, expressing why you feel you
would be suitable for the role, your current position, past and present
research interests and any experience you may have to Jen and Daniel at
