Dear List members -
When I started my PhD studies here at Oregon State, I began on a hunch. I
had been interested in GIS systems, and though these tools could have great
cross-over to several disciplines within design. I didn't have proof of
this, I simply thought it must be so. In addition to design, my minor
(which has oddly comprised most of my coursework) is in Geography -
Geospatial Information Systems. My studies have taken me to the Civil
Engineering department to learn LiDAR and surveying techniques, to Computer
Science to learn Python programming, to Geography to learn remote sensing
and cartographic techniques, etc. By and by, I began doing research in the
area of technologically mediated wayfinding. I now work with Google Glass
and other technologies. And while this has been quite fascinating (subject
for another thread) I keep hoping to find some evidence or some path
through the jungle between the GIS/Geography world and the world of
design.
In my more advanced Graduate classes, my classmates are all engineers, soil
scientists, geologists - nary a designer to be seen. Yet in Cartography we
discuss the merits of typefaces and pick color schemes. Some of the tools I
have learned, 3-D point cloud visualization, for example could be powerful
research tools for designers, but I can't seem to find literature or case
studies where these tools have been applied. A GIS could be a great tool
for an interior designer, but I see no evidence of these tools being
applied in that practice. Why is this so?
So the UAVs, GISs, LiDAR, and satellites remain the domain of hard
sciences - at least for now. Is anyone on this list aware of geospatial
technology being used in the creative aspects of design - either in
practice (POEs for example, or even in design phase) or even as a research
tool to promote better design decisions? I am looking for articles or case
studies in particular.
Much Obliged,
Paul
