A note from a colleague asking "what is the Design Society"
(in response to my posting of the new Journal, Design Science, sponsored in
part by the Design Society) made me realize that not everyone on this list
will know about them.
The Design Society is a British group (although international). it started
off as engineering design, but it now attempts to cover all design. So it
is a member of IASDR, etc. It runs the International Conference on
Engineering Design, ICSD, which today covers a lot more than traditional
engineering design.
And if you don't know what IASDR is, gee. So here is information about
both the *Design Society* and *IASDR*. While I am at it, I include the *Design
Research Society*. Note that people can belong to the Design Society and
the Design Research Society, but only societies can belong to IASDR. (Both
DS and DSR belong.) These organizations run two large conferences, ICED and
IASDR and a large number of smaller ones.
*Design Society*
http://www.designsociety.org/about-ds
The Design Society is an international non-governmental, non-profit making
organisation whose members share a common interest in design. It strives to
contribute to a broad and established understanding of all aspects of
design, and to promote the use of results and knowledge for the good of
humanity.
The Design Society was founded in 2000, taking on the previous activities
and responsibilities of the Workshop Design Konstruction (WDK) Society,
especially the organisation of the International Conference on Engineering
Design (ICED) series of conferences, which had been running since 1981.
Since 2000 the Society has organised ICED conferences in Stockholm,
Melbourne, Paris, Stanford and Copenhagen, with the 2013 event planned for
Seoul. It has also expanded with members from forty countries and with
further very popular events such as the Engineering and Product Design
Education conferences and the International Conference on Design Creativity
among many other activities. The Society is very active in publishing
papers and proceedings on design topics, and it has a developing portfolio
of other design resources available to members including a repository of
theses and collaborative agreements with a number of design research
journals.
The Design Society concentrates on activities that transcend national
boundaries, and, where possible, will seek to complement national
activities.
*IASDR: International Association of Societies of Design Research*
iasdr.org
The International Association of Societies of Design Research was formally
established on November 1, 2005.
The Association is an international, non-governmental, non-profit-making,
charitable organisation.
The Association is comprised of member societies of design research from
around the world.
The purpose of the Association is to promote research or study into or
about the activity of design in all its many fields of application, through
encouraging collaboration on an international level between independent
societies of design research.
The Association will promote, amongst other activities, the organisation of
biennial International Congresses of Design Research, at appropriate venues
around the world.International Association of Societies of Design Research

this website.
To support and participate in the Society and to receive the benefits of
membership, please join us. Membership is open to anyone engaged in
designing or design research and/or who wishes to support the Society's
