I very much recommend the treatment that Lars Albinsson gives to the
complexity of working with shareholders (or for that matter, even defining
who the shareholders are). As he says in his conclusion: His essay
can be said to belong to the social constructive pragmatism, and more
specifically the Systems Approach, as it recognizes the principles of this,
especially “any world view is terribly restricted”.
And inasmuch as two of my works are cited and (gently) criticized, all I
can say is that I would offer a harsher criticism of those works. After
all, they were published in the 1980s (the first editions) and gee, I
would hope that I have learned much in the ensuing decades.
Lars presents a very nice overall summary of the different approaches to
design with and for stakeholders, which includes many of
the issues faced by participatory designers and by co-design. I recommend
his paper.
