What the OP was probably suggesting was to call on ALL designers RESPONSIBLE for research PUBLICATION STANDARDS to do the thing properly.
I liken it to calling on all architects to NOT build their guild office without any plans and out of cardboard boxes and tin cans.
Or calling on all automoobile designers NOT to commute on the back of mules.
The list goes on...
Let's take a look at my emphasis on PUBLICATION STANDARDS.
Let's switch "publication" with "aerospatial".
Would you trust AEROSPATIAL STANDARDS to graphic designers?
I bet you wouldn't.
So... why do you trust PUBLICATION STANDARDS to people who know zero about publications?
Just because a badly designed (correction: non-designed) publication doesn't explode killing everyone, it doesn't mean it's worthless.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to design publications, but you need to be a DESIGNER.
The way you dismiss this issue is almost an insult to anyone who is a communication / visual designer.
It shows at least a gross misconception of what design is.
