In case you haven't come across it, in terms of getting a handle on how images in Wikimedia Commons are used the BaGLAMa tool (http://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/baglama.php) can help you see how images from cultural heritage orgs are being used in Wikimedia properties - drill down into the monthly totals then the different language wikipedia's to get details on the use of individual images
