Hi, Stéphane,

OR does this have not the same origin at all ? How Design Thinking Research
in the academic world is related (or not) to Design Thinking practioners's
approach?"
I have spent the literature review of my thesis researching the history of
design thinking and, as a result, published openly about this history and
development. You can access my version of events here:
http://ithinkidesign.wordpress.com/2012/01/18/a-brief-history-of-design-thinking-the-theory-p1/
To summarise: there is a general (broad) relationship between developments
in design theory, practice, and as a result, thinking that emerged since
the design methods movement. Part of the intention behind my research was
to investigate if there was in fact a connection between design thinking
(as we understand it today), to historical developments in design practice
and research. Scholars such as Nigel Cross (and many others) have had an
impact on the development of our contemporary understanding of design
thinking. Much of the historical academic research on design provided
deeper reflections on the nature of practice and thinking, with more recent
research providing empirical observations and analysis on the design
approach.
Obviously, one has to be careful not to claim a definitive or linear
development, so my writing on the development of design thinking is my own
interpretation of major historical turning points in design theory and
practice. I would also like to add that the subject of design, and our
understanding of design thinking, is not static. Some fundamental
characteristics may remain, but definitions and applications will shift,
evolve and change for as long as the world around us is turning.
I hope this helps
Kind Regards,
-Stefanie
