We are looking for a *PhD student in information design, on visualization
and production for complex display systems* at the Department of Science
and Technology, division for Media and Information Technology, Campus
Norrköping, Sweden.
At Linköping University we embrace innovative thinking. Constantly
challenging ourselves has been our strongest motivator ever since we opened
our doors in 1975. We are driven by seeking answers beyond the traditional
and across subject boundaries. If you are too, we would like to see you at
our university. Together we can find solutions to the challenges of the
day. Welcome to Linköping University. In the middle of Norrköping, in the
unique industrial landscape along Motala Ström, Linköping University has a
campus with both research and education. The activities at ITN, one of the
departments at the campus, is primarily focused around the three pillars of
organic electronics, media and communications / logistics, but also
physics, mathematics, control theory and other classic areas are included.
Most of the activities are research, but also education is important. The
Institute of Technology at Linköping University runs several engineering,
bachelor and master programs in Norrköping, and the department is here
active offering around 200 courses each year. There are also around 80
active PhD-students.
*Duties:*
The research focuses mainly on the design of new forms of presentation and
tools for the Dome theatre in Visualization Center C associated with Campus
Norrköping. The position is attached to the project "DomePres - Beyond
PowerPoint - concept development for dome presentations". The dome theatre
invites to an extraordinary experience, and also has great potential as a
visualization tool. Today the dome theatre is primarily used for research
and public screenings of movies and interactive presentations, but there is
also interest from businesses and organizations to use the facility for
presentations and events.
Both the dome theatre and the VR arena in the centre has potential for
entirely new forms of presentation, that go far beyond what is currently
used in society at large. The research challenge is that design principles
and presentation tools for other media are not directly transferable.
Presentations relying on normal presentation formats use only a small
portion of the display surface of the Dome. Therefore, we are seeking a
graduate student to conduct research into how communication can be
designed, using for instance video, text, animation, and 3D, primarily for
a full dome format. To make it possible for companies and design agencies
to design their own presentations using the new forms of presentation,
problems with existing tools will be identified. Concepts for tools to
realize new forms of presentation will be designed and studied. New tools
and workflows for presentations will therefore also be explored. The work
includes collaboration within the University, with different research
groups, and work with design agencies primarily in Norrköping area,
focussing on design and evaluation of presentations, the production
process, and tools.
Design research is therefore required, to explore design principles for
presentations as well as to explore the design of tools and workflows to
enable production using the design principles. This includes research on
the production and design process, as well as instrumental and experiential
qualities. Research in communication through multimedia is thus central,
with a focus on explaining complex problems in engaging presentations. The
forms for the presentation as a whole, such as interaction between
participants, the use of secondary and personal displays, room for
improvisation during presentations, may be relevant. The work thus includes
both research through designing presentations, and through designing
presentation tools. Both case study methodology and experimental
methodology for design research might be used.
The goal is to rely on the unique infrastructure at the Visualization
Center C as a point of departure to:
- Conduct innovative research in information design for complex display
environments
- Create tools and workflows for the production of presentation centre
display system with a primary focus on the dome theatre.
- Conduct research in collaboration with industry in developing tools and
presentations
The PhD student should focus primarily on the research training. However, a
PhD student is also normally engaged in teaching and administration to a
maximum of 20 percent of full-time.
*Requirements:*
To qualify for this position, it is required to have a degree at the
advanced level in Information Design, Graphic Design, Design of Multimedia
or equivalent. Design skills are more important than technical skills for
this position.
It is a particular advantage to have knowledge in the design and production
of multimedia. That means ability and knowledge with regard to video,
typography, information graphics, interaction forms, 3D, animation, and how
it can be integrated into a whole. Furthermore, documented knowledge of
research through design, at for example the Masters level is qualifying.
You also need to have the ability to work both individually, but also in
cooperation with companies and in collaboration with research groups at
Linköping University.
*Appointment time: *
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a
time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period not exceeding
eight years. The total time of appointment must no exceed the equivalent of
four years full time research training.
*Starting date*
As soon as possible
*Salary*
The salary for a PhD student is set after a local salary stepladder.
