Hi Marko,
If you have a look at the four functionality videos on the Midland Valley website then you can see (and hear) large drops of rain falling on the screen while Jenny is demonstrating the app - it's Scotland so situation normal!
We've been using iPhones extensively on the North Face of Ben Nevis over the past few weeks in some pretty atrocious conditions and the app has performed brilliantly. I had to wear gloves most of the time and even though the gloves were not touchscreen compatible I had no problems using the phone. I use a waterproof and shockproof case. There's a bit of a design flaw with the case - it collects water on the front screen because of the bevelled edge. You just need to tip out the water that has collected on the face of the screen, but you can still use the device without having to reach for a towel.
Using a traditional paper map, notebook and compass would not have been possible in these conditions. The iPhone5 seems to cope well, but I've not tried any other devices in this sort of environment.
Some links to climbing blogs about our recent work on Ben Nevis (my summer holiday)

Hi Roddy,
I'll certainly eagerly wait to see the new touch interface - the team that designed the extremely useful Clino user interface must be right(!). Not having to reach for stylus all the time, and not being permanently afraid of loosing it, would be a big bonus in the field. Not to mention that stylii are not that often included with tablets.
I wonder though how things will work when fingers and/or tablet screen gets wet - most touchscreens, particularly in consumer grade hardware, are not designed to handle this and become pretty erratic to work with.
Not much is needed to induce this behavious - pushing oneself through a wet bush is quite enough.
My field machine at the moment is the lowly Sony Xperia Active cell phone, which is rugged (I destroyed two previous phones by dropping them, and that was not during fieldwork), can use GLONASS satellites for navigation which is a big plus in the forested terrain, and works perfectly when wet. Other touchscreens I used simply become useless with a few drops of water on the screen.
Best regards, Marko
