Dear all,
As I was giving a class on Human Centered Design methods I wondered if
you know of publications on the behaviour of (novice) designers in
projects with input from user studies (e.g. Usability Problems, findings
about user goals and behaviour etc.) and/or projects that rely on
findings from such studies (e.g. in Interaction Design, Human Centered
Design).
In studies of design processes (for a review see: Design Cognition,
Cross) a focus on solutions (instead of problems) and a problem/solution
co-evolution have been found. User studies, however, may clash with
these practices: They may render solutions less valuable than assumed
and are not solution focused (but describe problems/opportunities). Thus
it would be very interesting to know more about this – and such findings
may help educators to better teach the use of user research methods in
the context of design projects.
The publications that were along the lines I described above are:
- Understanding Interaction Design Practices (Goodman, Stolterman, Wakkary)
- A protocol study of novice interaction design behaviour in Botswana:
solution-driven interaction design
However, I wonder if you know any other publications that might be of
interest in regard to this.
Kind regards,
Jan
