International Conference “New perspectives on the
villancico and related genres in the Iberian World (15th-19th centuries)”

Call for papers
 
The present conference aims both to present a critical
assessment of recent research in the field and to promote new perspectives
around the study of the villancico and other related genres in the vernacular
in Spain, Portugal and Iberoamerica from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
 
Potential topics for papers include, but are not limited
to:
* methodologies, historiographical problems and sources
for the study of the villancico and related genres in the Iberian World.
* function and ceremonial context of the villancico in
religious festivities.
* relations between the sacred and the secular: doctrinal
aspects, conceptism, contrafacta, and relations with secular genres.
* literary villancico: poetical forms, literary styles,
text authorship, printing in chapbooks (pliegos) and books.
* musical villancico: formal issues, musical styles,
composeres, text-music relation.
* typologies, variants, and related genres: canción,
ensalada, tono, cantada, villancicos de calenda, de jácara, de pastorela, de
tonadilla, de negros, de indios, de gitanos, de gallegos, etc.
* politics, propaganda and representation of identities
in the villancico and related genres, the construction of imaginaries and
stereotypes.
* theatrality and performance issues of the villancico.
* dissemination of the genre: circulation, reuse and
adaptation of texts and musics.
* the popular and the learned between orality and
writing: transmission processes of the villancico.
* survival of the villancico and related genres during
the 19th century.
* recovery and recording of villancicos and the
construction of music performance models.
 
We welcome proposals for individual papers of twenty
minutes, in English or Spanish. Applications should include:
- paper abstract (ca. 200 words)
- author’s institutional affiliation (if any), short vita
and email address (ca. 150 words)
- description of audio-visual equipment required.

We understand that some international speakers may not be
able to travel to Baeza to present their papers, mainly due to financial
restrictions. For some individual cases a virtual presentation system via video
conferencing could be considered.
 
The Colloquium will culminate in several concerts by
leading early music ensembles such as La Ritirata, Christian Zacharias, and
Accademia del Piacere, among others (from 5 to 8 December). The concerts will
take place both in Ubeda and Baeza, World Heritage Cities of the greatest
historical and artistic interest.

villancico y géneros afines en el mundo ibérico (ss. XV-XIX)”

UNIVERSIDAD INTERNACIONAL DE ANDALUCÍA, Baeza (España)
 
El presente Congreso pretende ofrecer un balance crítico
de la investigación reciente sobre el tema y, al mismo tiempo, promover nuevas
perspectivas en torno al estudio del villancico y otros géneros
literario-musicales afines en lengua vernácula en España, Portugal e
Iberoamérica durante los siglos XV al XIX.
 
Temas para la presentación de comunicaciones (no
excluyentes):
* metodologías, problemas historiográficos y fuentes para
el estudio del villancico y géneros afines en el mundo ibérico.
* funciones y contexto ceremonial del villancico en las
festividades religiosas.
* relaciones entre lo sacro y lo profano: contenidos
doctrinales, conceptismo, contrafacta y relación con géneros profanos.
* el villancico literario: formas poéticas, estilos
literarios, autoría de los textos, impresión en pliegos y libros.
* el villancico musical: aspectos formales, estilos
musicales, compositores, relación música-texto.
* tipologías, variantes y géneros afines: canción,
ensalada, tono, cantada, villancicos de calenda, de jácara, de pastorela, de
tonadilla, de negros, de indios, de gitanos, de gallegos, etc.
* política, propaganda y representación de identidades en
el villancico y géneros afines, la construcción de imaginarios y estereotipos.
* teatralidad y aspectos performativos en el villancico.
* la diseminación del género: circulación, reutilización
y adaptación de textos y músicas.
* lo popular y lo culto entre oralidad y escritura:
procesos de transmisión del villancico.
* la pervivencia del villancico y géneros en vernácula en
el siglo XIX.
* la recuperación y grabación del villancico y la
construcción de modelos interpretativos.
 
Damos la bienvenida a la presentación de propuestas
individuales de comunicaciones de 20 minutos, en inglés o español. Las
propuestas deben incluir:
- resumen (ca. 200 words)
- afiliación institucional (si procede), breve biografía
y dirección electrónica del autor (ca. 150 words)
- medios audiovisuales requeridos

Entendemos que algunos comunicantes internacionales
pueden no tener posibilidad de viajar a Baeza para presentar su investigación, principalmente
por restricciones financieras. Para determinados casos, podrá considerarse la
posibilidad de participación a través de video conferencia.
 
El Congreso culminará con una serie de conciertos, a
cargo de destacadas formaciones en el campo de la música antigua como La
Ritirata, Christian Zacharias y Accademia del Piacere, entre otras (del 5 al 8
de diciembre). Los conciertos tendrán lugar tanto en Úbeda como en Baeza,
ciudades “Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad”, de gran interés histórico y artístico.
