I agree whole heartedly with Manueli. The letter is inflammatory and one sided in a conflict that is incredibly complex and very two sided. I suggest that a cooling off period where we all read Thomas Friedman's op-ed piece from the New York Times a few weeks ago (published in many other newspapers, but I'm from New York, so yes, I'm biased or partial).
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/29/opinion/sunday/thomas-l-friedman-who-is-setting-the-sectarian-fires-in-the-middle-east.html?_r=0
He talks about arsonists and firefighters in the Middle East conflict. I suppose that there is no hard evidence on this, but that is like the evidence on needing a parachute to jump out of a plane. I can live with the choice of being an arsonist or a firefighter and certainly would choose to be the firefighter, and would also choose to use a parachute when leaving an airplane in flight.
I apologize for being a bit long winded and sermonizing, but a one sided approach can only inflame (arsonists) the situation and not lead to any clarity or solution.
Best wishes and hoping for a peaceful resolution of not only the Gaza situation, but the entire Middle East. There are many peoples in that region and they deserve to live side by side in peace and with mutual respect and consideration.

Hi everyone! I am worried that the discussion is becoming like a "religious debate to the never ending religious war" and I wonder if this is a forum to discuss it! And I can almost sense the fumes steaming out of my screen as soon as I opened my inbox this morning.
I am reminded there is something called "EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE" and all leaders, Doctors and Academics included, are champions of it! So can we practice that in this issue and be mindful that other don't receive our "AMYGDALA HIJACKS" on their inboxes!
You all have a great weekend!

With respect to other opinions in this case.
But I believe if this was written to describe what is happening by a country other than Israel , we never had this argument
Everyone would agree that those children, women and even animals must be protected by all means.
But the world is watching this massacre and try to find excuses for it because just it's Israel and USA.

To every story, there is one side, there is the other side and then there is the truth. Maybe you should write an open letter in the Lancet describing your point of view and let the readers decide which is closer to the truth.

As a graduate of Tel-Aviv university and somebody who has practiced medicine in Israel treating both Israelis and Arabs, if you want the truth about the EVIDENCE I would be happy to provide this information.
I am surprised that people who call themselves champions of the evidence would write such a once sided article.
