I'm doing a DIY course on identifying a random collection of animal
bones (Ontario, Canada).
I've got part of a bone that looks very like the distal phalanges of
deer, but it's quite a bit bigger than the ones I got for comparison.
The (assumed) proximal end is 2.5cm long. Other measurements aren't
possible.
Anyone know if this would fit in with deer (white deer?) sizes? Are
there other N. American wild/domestic animals that would have a
similarly shaped phalange? I couldn't find any photos of the right view
for cows, but I got the impression they'd be chunkier.
I don't think this bone would photograph very well - I doubt the details
would show. But if anyone can give me a rough answer, that'd be a start.
Or somewhere on the internet that has photos of relevant proximal ends
of distal phalanges. (Why don't these get shown with the other views????)
Thanks,
Eve (trying to be an archaeologist from my bed)
