There was a recent announcement of a conference in October at Tongji
School of Design and Innnovation, Shanghai.
The list of keynote speakers included me and Ken. This list responded with
several messages:
- This conference sounds great and exciting. I would hope, however, that
women are also added to the list of keynote speakers.
- Well said. This sort of thing still astonishes me.
- this is what I always look for when making decisions about whether to
attend. And it is still common practice, an ‘oversight’ in many places, as
is gender distribution across editorial boards in some journals (see my
paper below). Clerke, T. 2010, ‘Gender and discipline: publication
practices in Design’, Journal of Writing for Creative Practice, vol. 3, no.
1, pp. 64–78.
I am one of the male keynoters in this conference. I agree with the
complaints and lack of diversity. I have written to the conference
organizers, sending them the quotations above.
I would like wider representation. More women? Absolutely. More diversity
in general.
thank you for the comments.
