Dear Bijan,
Very interesting articulation of 'emerging design'.
As you are asking for adding to your insights, I would like to add to your list of 'think big' and 'think simultaneous' and...: 'think emergence'.
Besides of designing solutions (whether designed by a designer on his own or designed by a designer co-creating with stakeholders), another possibility is designing for evolution, designing for changing behaviour of collectives.
While we always had this possibility (we mostly did it unconsciously: have a look at 'Don't mess with Texas' on Wikipedia)> The possibility is now better enabled than ever. With growing connectivity in society, it regularly 'happens to us' (think 'Occupy Wall Street' or 'Arab Spring'). But we learn step by step to design for emerging processes/changing behaviour of collectives, consciously.
The practice (an illustration, relevant in today's context ;):
While the Belgians were jealous on the Dutch with their soccer-enthousiasm and bright orange colours everywhere (just have a look at the WK Brazil later today), in Belgium there was a conscious effort to design for such an emerging, articulated shift in community behavior ( stimulate soccer-enthousiasm and with great effects and lots of collective creativity (see: The devil challenges)

(For part of the effects: watch WK Brazil next tuesday)
The theory:
I did my PhD on this topic (U Groningen): Imagineering the Butterfly Effect, Designing for Organizational Emergence and the book will be on the market (Published by Eleven International Publishing) from September onwards: Imagineering the Butterfly Effect, Transformation by Inspiration. In the book the complexity-inspired design approach is articulated in depth and evaluated on its effectiveness to effectuate change/organizational transformation.

Education:
Already for 8 years we have a yearly Master in Imagineering where business students and design students together, learn to design for emerging processes, whether that is about strategy, (systemic) innovation or change.

Onderwerp: A turning point?
Dear list members,
All of us know how changes in the economy, society and technology can
affect the design discipline. Design history in the 20th century showed us
how mass manufacturing and geopolitical shifts in the West formed a new
definition for design, especially after the Second World War. To some
extent, the way that we think about design is still influenced by that
definition. However, empowerment of emerging non-Western economies,
especially in Asia, participation of women in the design industry, new
technologies which allow simultaneous design and production, the emergence
of non-physical products, and many other important changes can define a new
“design” for this century. Some of us may believe that this is a turning
point, and some other may say that "change" is the nature of life and while
these changes are important, this is not right to talk about a turning
point or a new definition.
I will be happy to watch this video about “Emerging Design” and share your
insights about this topic. This is a start point for further discussions
like new definitions of design, its sub disciplines and skills needed for
future designers:
