Dear James and those interested in the role of sketches in the design
process,
I have recently completed my PhD in which I used inter alia Goel's
theory on notational systems and the cognitive role of sketches of
expert designers and used it as part of an integrated conceptual
framework for empirically studying architecture, mechanical engineering
and industrial designers. The mixed methodology methodology resulted in
showing interesting hierarchies of thinking, with a transparent set of
data showing the role of the sketches they made.
I found most of the authors you mention in your email below very
informative, especially Gero (1998) who provides useful methodological
guidelines in their article Macroscopic analysis of design processes
(Design Studies vol 19 no 4)
In our department, two of my Master's students are currently researching
the role of sketches, one on children and another on industrial design
children and the educational implications thereof.
The framework we use also show how sketches act as tool for expressing
content of thoughts, as representation of the structure thoughts as
well as external source of emerging information.

However, my point in posting what I did was that, as designers, we have
no underlying neuroscientific findings to support our

the relationship between drawing and thinking, however good they might
be, will need such evidence to make our case.
