I hope this is relevant to this thread.
Next week the Information Design Association is hosting a discussion about the use of research in practice, and if/how the flow of communication between research and practice could be improved. We hope to hear from both researchers and practitioners. Open to anyone who wants to participate.
The IDA uses Google+ hangouts for their discussions, so doesn't matter where you are in the world.
The discussion is scheduled for Monday 9 June, 5–6 pm (BST)
You can find more details and sign up at the IDA website

Dear Ken,
Thanks for the detailed explanation about the possibilities of practitioners for doing research. I understand that finding good examples of the types of research would be time-consuming.
You did not answer the main question in my last post: “Is clinical research a valid possibility for systematic research and PhD research?” In other words, could an academic research project or a PhD dissertation be clinical research? Is it enough? Would a design practice project with a rich component of research but just for one specific situation be enough?
