Has anyone come across a third party mobile app that can do self service checkout? using the customers phone or tablet camera to scan the item barcode and issue the item?
Our lms vendor has spoken about self service checkout with a mobile app but this has not translated into a release plan. I don't see why a third party couldn't build an app and then hook it into various lms using sip (or something better).
Sip2 is a pain because the lack of encryption means that you would need a server with a vpn back to the lms to tunnel the sip traffic. I believe sip3 or bic lcf should get around that. If the protocol can be secured then you could just update the app with a database of library services and their associated sip IPs and ports. The app address them directly.
Has anyone seen anything like this?
Any thoughts on the feasibility or worth of the idea?
