11 Doctoral Training Studentships in Digital Civics

We have 11 fully funded four-year doctoral studentships in Digital Civics
(commencing September 2014) for UK and EU domiciles applicants, and are
seeking applicants with a passion for civic life, an interest in how digital
technologies can be used to support citizens and communities, and an
undergraduate or masters level education in one of the constituent
disciplines of our new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Civics:
computer science, design, education, health sciences, planning and
architecture, psychology, politics, or social science.
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Digital Civics at Newcastle
University will train a minimum of 55 doctoral students (5 annual intakes of
at least 11 students) in the design, deployment and evaluation of
community-driven digital technologies and services. Whether it is through
the redesign local services with communities, or rethinking how citizens can
and do interact with local government, technology innovation and design has
a critical role to play in enabling digitally connected citizens and
communities.
The CDT in Digital Civics brings together a wealth of expertise in Newcastle
University, and is a collaboration between 6 of the Universityıs leading
research centres: Digital Interaction <http://di.ncl.ac.uk/> (at Culture
Lab); the Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security
<http://cccs.ncl.ac.uk/> ; the Institute for Health and Society
<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/ihs> ; the Centre for Learning and Teaching
<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/cflat> ; the Global Urban Research Unit
<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/guru> ; and the Centre for Rural Economy
<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/cre/> . Doctoral students will be supervised by a
cross-disciplinary committee of supervisors from these centres, and will be
expected to undertake projects related to at least one of six Digital Civic
research themes:
· Digital public health and social care
· Digital community learning
· Digital local democracy
· Human-computer interaction, ubiquitous and social computing
· Collaborative and participatory design
· Digital security, privacy and trust
The CDT is a unique partnership between Newcastle University, Newcastle City
Council, Gateshead Council and Northumberland County Council, and a range of
local, national and global industry and third sector partners. The CDT aims
to deliver applied research training for doctoral researchers and includes a
program of intensive training and research, and internships and placements
at some of the worldıs leading charities, companies and universities.
All doctoral students will benefit from an annual stipend of £13,726 a year
for 4 years, will be provided with their own laptop and additional funding
for research costs and local, national and international travel to attend
conferences and participate in industrial and academic exchanges (with some
of the worldıs leading universities and corporations).
