Design Journal special issue: Emerging Issues in Service Design (Aug
2014)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/design-journal-special-issue-emerging-issues-in-service-design-aug-2014/>

Deadline for submissions: 1 August 2014

Service Design today constitutes a specific field of design research, which
focuses on issues, methods and practices in relation with the conception,
planning, development, and delivery of services. It is a rapidly growing
field that expands our debates on the values, qualities and forms of
designing.

This Special Issue strives to contribute to a deeper understanding of the
implications and challenges of designing for services with a look at its
future developments.

Location: Paris Descartes University – Paris College of Arts

Design today is increasingly being recognized as creating value – whether
for cultural and collective intelligence, for embedding new technology into
new behaviours, for fostering or acting as a force for change in societies
and for companies confronted with complex problems. This value is based on
design research within a large variety of settings and scientific
backgrounds. The gestalt of the conference is “the whole is more than just
the sum of its parts”. Taking this principle to heart, the conference will
bring together all stakeholders in design research and design process
innovation. University labs, design schools, and R&D departments from
industries have been invited.

Edited Volume: The Craft Economy: Making, Materiality, and Meaning
(July 2014)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2014/04/25/edited-volume-the-craft-economy-making-materiality-and-meaning-july-2014/>

Edited by Susan Luckman (University of South Australia) & Nicola Thomas
(University of Exeter).

A making renaissance is underway with handmade practice and goods in global
demand. Thus the central aim of The Craft Economy collection is to bring
together a comprehensive account of the current moment of growth in the
contemporary handmade marketplace. We wish to examine the reasons why we
are now seeing such significant growth, and identify the key drivers – both
in terms of production and consumption. Importantly, we seek to locate this
discussion within the larger picture of its implications for our
understandings of the contemporary cultural economy. For example, what it
may reveal about perceptions of authenticity and practices of ethical
consumption, as well as shifting labour and production models (creative
micro-enterprise; the home-based digital cultural economy; the attraction
of entrepreneurial self-employment; and the gendering of craft work). In
the digital age, almost seventy years since the Frankfurt School first
railed against the culture industry’s commodification and standardisation
of all art, the bespoke ‘analogue’ physical item becomes Othered,
different, desirable. Handmade objects are imbrued with touch, and
therefore offer a sense of the ‘authentic’ in an ‘inauthentic’ world: they
offer connection to the maker through the skill and learning apparent in
their construction, and they demonstrate the time spent on their making in
a way in most other objects cannot. Handmade cultural goods thus need to be
located within wider debates regarding ethical consumption, makings, and
‘retro’ interest in unique physical artefacts.

AIS/Design Storia e Ricerche #4: Italian Material Design: Learning from
History (July 2014)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2014/04/23/aisdesign-storia-e-ricerche-4-italian-material-design-learning-from-history-july-2014/>

Editors: G. Bosoni and M. Ferrara

The 4th number of the “Ais/Design. Storia e Ricerche” Journal (expected
journal publication November 2014), is proposed as an occasion of
confrontation on the theme of the relationship between materials and
Italian design. The aim of this call is to collect a series of original
contributions with unpublished writings or re-positioning well known
stories, that provide documentary evidence of the proposed topic (the
particular attention of the Italian Design to materials, technologies and
productive processes), with its various stories – product, fashion,
interiors, visual, etc. – also focusing on how communication design
contributed to build this myth. Even if based on the Italian history, the
call also demands a other contributions that could compare foreign episodes
and experiences with these Italian realities to better understand the
specificities of the Italian case.

Special Issue of Simulation & Gaming: Service Design Games (May
2014)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2014/04/15/special-issue-of-simulation-gaming-service-design-games-may-2014/>

APRIL 15, 2014

Deadline for submissions: 31 May 2014
Website: http://sg.sagepub.com/ and http://www.unice.fr/sg/

Service Design may, to an outside eye, seem an unlikely area in which to use
games and play. However, the fields of Service Innovation, Service Design,
Participatory Design and Co-Design have a strong tradition of using games
and playful activities to improve existing services and innovate new ones.
Games are used with the staff, management, customers and other stakeholders
of service providers. Yet these games have so far been developed, deployed
and analyzed in relative isolation from the research conducted within game
studies and the study of simulation/games. The aim of this symposium
(special issue) is to fill this academic void by bringing together,
consolidating and promoting contributions from service design games and
placing them into dialogue with work in the sibling fields. Thus, the study
of service design games will also contribute to simulation and game studies
and design worldwide, and will in turn assist service designers in making
their games even more efficient and interesting than they are now.

The space industry is constantly innovating. 2014 has already presented a
number of challenges and opportunities. What is the future of global
cooperation? How will cuts in US government spending affect the private
sector? How will the commercial launch sector evolve? Will suborbital be a
game changer? Reinventing Space addresses these issues and more.

J Artistic Research special issue on Criticism (June

One of the most common terms bandied about in academic circles of late is
‘Artistic Research.’ It has become a regular feature in seminars,
departments are being built around it, and exhibition texts are smattered
with it. Yet, as the Journal for Artistic Research – a peer-reviewed
journal of the Society for Artistic Research – reminds us, the term remains
elusive. What JAR offers is not so much a definition of artistic research
as examples of it. Recognising that text is only one of a number of
possibilities to present research to a wider audience and taking advantage
of online multimedia formats, the journal offers artists a space to unfold
their research where they can use words and/or alternative modes of
expressions, such as video, sound, and slide shows. The journal then
provides a forum for peer-to-peer discussion.

EuropIA Conferences are organized as a cross-platform for the study and
analysis of the application of the ICT to architecture, archaeology,
building engineering, civil engineering, urban design and policy analysis.
The aim of EuropIA international conferences is to promote advancements of
information and communication technology (ICT) and their effective
application for the Building and Construction industry. The characteristic
of these conferences is the interaction of different disciplines regarding
their approach, methods and techniques for the application of advanced
technologies.

Portugal)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/designa-2014-intl-conf-on-design-research-nov-2014-portugal/>

APRIL 1, 2014

Dates: 20-21 November 2014
Location: University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal
Website: http://www.designa.ubi.pt/en/2014
Deadline for submissions: 31 May 2014

DESIRE is the chosen theme to DESIGNA’s 4th edition, returning to the
University of Beira Interior November 20th and 21st, 2014.

The call for papers starts today and will be open until May 31st. We
welcome the submission of original communication proposals with a seminal
propensity that are able to explore the connection between Design and
Desire within one of the six thematic frames that structure the conference:
Communication, Multimedia, Product, Fashion, Theory and Education.

In this first moment, we invite researchers and designers to submit an
abstract with their intended communication proposal. After a double blind
review process and the authors’ acceptance notification, we will ask for
the submission of the full paper, regarding the publication of the
proceedings. The submission procedures can be found in the conference’s
website – www.designa.ubi.pt/en/2014 -, a platform available both in
portuguese and in english, where you can check all the necessary
information about the event and its calendar.

DESIGNA has been contributing, since 2011, to consolidate the research on
Design both academically and socially, nationally and internationally.
Therefore, we ask everyone who’s interested to spread the word about the
conference’s call for papers and to join us at Covilhã next November.
