Friends
I am a bit hesitant to ask this question here. please excuse if this is
irrelevant.
I have been also exploring maths in the context of the inititaitve ' Re
Imagining schools' where we asking all the taken for granted questions and
one of them is what is mathematics ?
I am asking this to explore how to introduce 'subjects' showing the
integral nature of knowledge, with out compartmentalizing them not only
between so called subjects but also with in each subject. The how
mathematical structure is in operation in life as well as the relation
between various chapters.
Off course we are also exploring at what age the child should be introduced
to various aspects are also being explored by studying what children are
doing naturally.
May be - What the child wants to know is how the world functions and how to
live in the world. How the world functions is the so called science. And
the structure and the quantifiable aspect is the mathematical aspect. Our
experience of the world gets articulated in language. So language is formed
based on what and how things happen around us. In a way the structure of
the language is the structure of how we encounter the way the world
happens.
I am hoping to elaborate on this and explore further.
Is any one of you aware of such a study/ book?
The following is an interesting video by Richard Feynmann on Mathematics

*(Richard Feynman explains the main differences in the traditions of how
mathematical reasoning is employed between mathematicians and physicists.)*
