Dear colleagues,

We have an opening in my research group. The ad is here: http://www.aalto.fi/en/about/careers/jobs/view/193/
and this is the text:

----------

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (or Doctoral Candidate)

Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland – the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The university's ambitious goal is to rank among the top universities in the world in its areas of specialization. At Aalto there are 20,000 students with around 75,000 alumni. We have a staff of 5,000 including 400 professors.

Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture is one of the most prestigious international universities of art and design in the world. The school is a strong source of social influence. Key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, well-being architecture and emerging technologies, and urban planning and design. The school’s history dates back to 1871.

The Department of Media is an academic community of approximately 500 students and 80 staff members created through a restructuring of the School of Art and Design in January 2010. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. The study programmes and research of the department are organized within three units; the Media Lab, Graphic Design and Photography.

The Arki research group in the Department of Media invites applications for

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (or Doctoral Candidate) in Transdisciplinary Design Research

The position will be filled as soon as possible, but starting date is negotiable. The assignment is for maximum of two years. The position is connected to the development of the “Redesign of Society” initiative.

Key Accountabilities and Qualifications

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Arki research group (http://arki.mlog.taik.fi) that studies the digitalization of everyday life, and the challenges and opportunities for design that this creates.

We are building a new critical transdisciplinary study and research initiative with the theme of “Redesign of Society” (for more detailed information, see http://arki.mlog.taik.fi/2014/05/28/redesign-of-society-initiative-in-the-works/), and are looking for a researcher and project leader to work with our group leader in building the new initiative. The job will include various types of work, including research, teaching, organizing study and research activities, building the network, preparing research plans and funding applications. There will be also a limited chance to work on focused personal research that is related to the overall thematics, especially so if the work proves successful in terms of generating additional funding.

We are looking for a researcher who already has relevant experience that helps her or him to engage with the theme quickly and effectively and give strong support for the development of various transdisciplinary teaching, research and networking activities starting immediately. As the work will need to build a strong network within Finland, good knowledge of the Finnish society and its structures and funding systems and excellent communication abilities in the Finnish language are advantages. However, as the work will also be strongly international in its scope, the main working language will be English, and excellent spoken and written English ability is required.

We appreciate experience and track record of work that spans and transcends the disciplinary boundaries of design, design research, and e.g. philosophy, humanities, communications, or social or political sciences, including high quality academic contributions. We are primarily seeking a post-doctoral researcher (the Doctor’s degree preferably completed within the last five years), but encourage also doctoral candidates with highly relevant experience and research interest to apply. An applicant without a doctorate must possess a post-graduate study place in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, or in some other equivalent University.

Location

Media Lab of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Miestentie 3, Espoo, Finland.

Wage level

Salary will be paid according to the University’s salary scheme.

Application period and instructions

Please submit your application documents, including (1) a motivation letter with a description of your background and experience, especially considering the Redesign of Society theme (seehttp://arki.mlog.taik.fi/2014/05/28/redesign-of-society-initiative-in-the-works/), (2) CV, (3) a list of publications, (4) a portfolio of earlier work that you consider relevant, and (5) a possible certificate of the doctoral degree, in Saima recruitment system by June 10th 2014. We appreciate if you are able to submit all documents within a single pdf file.

We will start processing applications as soon as they come in, so we encourage early submissions. All application materials should be in English.

Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.

The application materials will not be returned.
