Keynote speakers:
Professor Nicholas Till (Sussex University)
Professor of Opera and Music Theatre, Director and Leverhulme Research Fellow.
During a career as a theatre and opera director Nick worked for most of the main UK opera companies and worked as a writer and director of new works for the English National Opera Studio, Royal Opera Garden Venture, Stuttgart Opera, Festival Rhizome Rennes, DMCE Paris, etc. He also worked as a director of community and education projects in music, opera and theatre for Glyndebourne Opera, National Theatre, Barbican Centre, Royal Opera, English National Opera etc. Since 1998 his artistic activities have included work as co-artistic director of the experimental music theatre company Post-Operative Productions, working in both performance and audio-visual installation. His theatre work is discussed in two chapters entitled ‘Per un teatro post-operistico. Adorno, Badiou, Till’' and 'Nicholas Till e l'(anti)manifesto' in a new book by Francesco Ceraolo Registi All’Opera: Note sull’etstetica della regia operistica, published by Bulzoni (Rome) in 2011, which includes a complete translation into Italian of his 2004 manifesto for a post-operatic music theatre entitled "I don't mind if something's operatic, just as long as it's not opera".
Mary King (International mezzo-soprano)
Mary's career has encompassed a wide rangeof roles, including that of performer, teacher, coach and most recentlybroadcaster and writer. A popular and highly experienced mezzo soprano, Maryhas worked with leading conductors and numerous orchestras across the world,and has made a particular feature of the contemporary classical repertoire.During Mary's long association with English National Opera, she devised and rana highly successful performance skills course, 'The Knack', for eleven years,and between 2004 and 2006 she was also an Artistic Associate for the company.She is a regular guest presenter on BBC Radio 3 (Breakfast / Burnside / TheChoir), and she has been one of the judges on the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Yearcompetition since 2006. In 2007 The Singer's Handbook (Faber)was published, co-written with Anthony Legge. This has been followed by thefirst two parts (English and French repertoire) of a projected series ofselected vocal repertoire collections with coaching notes, The BooseyVoice Coach (Boosey & Hawkes). The German repertoire volume is inproduction.
Final call for Abstracts of 200 wordsshould be sent to Dr F Jane Schopf (Conference Chair)[log in to unmask] by June 21st.Papers will be 20 minutes duration.
Themes of papers might include: Opera,Opera and film, the Musical, performance practice, music in theatre.
Papers will be published by CambridgeScholars Publishing (subject to peer review)
