In fairness, here is a further qualification to the message I forwarded
yesterday.

Dear FRANCOFILers
Without (yet) joining this debate about IES, I just wish to correct one
aspect of this message. It is NOT currently being proposed that IMLR
merge with anybody. The recommendation from the Vice-Chancellor's
Executive Group is that aspects of IES (particularly the History of the
Book project, palaeography, etc.) go to the Institute of Historical
Research, and that within IMLR a new Centre is created (analogous to our
existing Centres, in Contemporary Women's Writing etc.) devoted to
Comparative Literature, with a new Lectureship post. As far as Modern
Languages is concerned, this could actually be beneficial, however
uncomfortable we may feel about the current turn of events.
I hope to have more to say later in the week.
best wishes
Bill Marshall, Director, IMLR

Subject: [FRANCOFIL] Institute of Modern Languages Research
Dear Colleagues,
Yesterday, the University of London announced plans to re-structure its
research institutes following funding cuts from HEFCE.
It is proposed that the Institute of Modern Languages Research (recently
re-branded from the IGRS), be merged with the Institute of English
Studies and the Institute of Historical Research to form an Institute of
Comparative Literature.

There is much anger from the English community about this and a campaign
group is being organised by Anne Varty, Head of English at Royal
Holloway ([log in to unmask]). But these decisions also have worrying
implications for Modern Languages.
Please spread the word and encourage Heads of Departments and Subject
Groups to do the same.
